THE BVC Jamboree offers development and opportunity to everyone involved – not just the players.
Referees from across the state have been selected to attend the BVC Jamboree as part of their development, honing and enhancing country Victoria’s officiating ranks.
Attending the elite junior camp in Echuca, the referees will learn from high-calibre referee coaches – like BVC mainstay Pam Brasher – and take their new found knowledge back home to their associations and domestic branches.
While the Jamboree is a great learning exercise for the players, it’s an even better event to help cultivate the country’s next great junior referees.
To make sure the referees from all parts of Victoria receive professional development and education, Basketball Victoria Country has ensured a select group of these officials will get access to the same resources at the Jamboree.
BVC has awarded 18 BVC Jamboree Referee Scholarships to encourage referees from across the state to hone their skills and learn from the Jamboree’s referee advisors throughout the intensive four-day program.
BVC Referee Development Officer Karin Berrysmith said the scholarship program is a fantastic initiative and will ensure the rural and regional referees from smaller associations are effectively resourced heading into the next season of basketball and beyond.
“The scholarship program was designed to give opportunities to smaller associations who don’t have full access to a dedicated referee coach as a resource at their association,” Berrysmith said.
Smaller associations who have contacted and arranged referee courses and developed their education plans in consultation with BVC are given priority to receive Jamboree Scholarships.
“This is the first step for emerging referees to experience a tournament in a safe and protected environment with exposure to BVC referee coaching expertise,” Berrysmith said. “The learning is then taken back to the official’s home association to further enhance their competition.”
The selected referees will attend the BVC Jamboree from 23-26 September held in Echuca.
