Southern Cross Challenge 2020 final standings

VICTORIAN teams topped all pools and ranked impressively this weekend across the board for both Country and Metropolitan sides.

Held at the State Basketball Centre, the invitational tournament allows selected under-14 and under-15 teams from across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, ACT and Western Australia to prepare as elite athletes and participate in high-calibre competition.

Victoria Metropolitan had three sides per age group featuring at the Challenge, including the Vic Metro Orange U14 team featuring elite players from our entry point to the pathway program – the Basketball Victoria Metropolitan Showcase. These elite players from the Showcase represented Vic Metro Orange as bottom age players and received an additional boost to their development efforts throughout the weekend-long tournament.

But it’s more than just the wins and losses and who rises to the top.

As we do with the Country Jamboree and the recently created Metropolitan Showcase, the Southern Cross Challenge has been put in place to help develop our next generation.

SCC stands as a stepping stone for our youngest elite athletes to help them transition from grassroots and community basketball into our high performance programs such as the State Development Program, as well as joining our 10 High Performance Hubs throughout Victoria. These elite athletes can also  become part of our state team programs and head to national junior championships… and it all starts with tournaments like the Southern Cross Challenge.

Basketball Victoria Operations Manager Grant Wallace said SCC’s importance remained strong as it continues to prepare all involved for even greater opportunities in years to come.

“The Southern Cross Challenge remains an important entry point to high performance basketball for up-and-coming athletes, coaches and referees across Victoria and other competing states,” Wallace said. “The best way to prepare for elite competitions and tournaments is to enter them and the under-14 and under-15 age groups get that chance with SCC against the best basketball talent from around the country.

“2020’s event continued highlighting the amazing capabilities of our athletes, coaches and referees as they improved and took to the challenge across the board.

“Whenever you put on a Victorian jersey – Vic Metro, Vic Country or through any of development programs – it is always an impressive accomplishment and everyone was extremely eager to get involved in the Southern Cross Challenge.

“A number of elite Victorian representatives have benefitted from the SCC as they now are part of our State Development Program, various state teams and some have even started earning Australian selection and collegiate opportunities – and it all starts at the beginning with pathway events like the SCC.”
