Surfcoast’s CBL preparations underway

The Surfcoast Chargers have grand plans to develop their basketball community, with the club seeking expressions of interest for both Senior Women and Senior Men’s sides.

Since the birth of Surf Coast Basketball in 2019, the Chargers have faced a number of challenges with just two teams in operation after being heavily affected by the postponement of basketball lockdowns.

But with its new home Wurdi Baierr Stadium opened in 2020, the Chargers are ready to ignite their senior basketball ambitions in 2021/2022.

Chargers club president Dave Scott, told Surf Coast Times that the association’s successful start in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) gives them great confidence to start up even more teams for its community.

“We’re quite a new program and we’re rapidly expanding,” Scott said. “We have been rapidly expanding and we have seen good growth in kids at the junior level.
“As a part of our VJBL expansion we will increase three-fold in numbers for our junior Chargers.”
Scott said the Chargers’ community-minded organisational values – inclusion, respect, effort, community and enjoyment – have seen the club grow dramatically.
“The element of being part of a team and what it can achieve together provides a good opportunity for fun, enjoyment and team morale, as well as opportunities to further development,” he said. “Senior sides in the area also gives the Surfcoast basketball community a chance to come down and spectate some of their local talent.”

Surfcoast will look to join the CBL South-West Division, which includes teams from across Victoria and South Australia such as Bellarine, Warrnambool and Mount Gambier.

CBL squad tryout dates haven’t been set yet, but once the interest is there the Charges are keen to get going and hopefully prepare for their inaugural season.
