Under-14 Country Championships conclude terrific season of regions future stars

The 2021 Country Championships came to a close this past weekend in Traralgon, when the Under-14 champions were crowned.

A jam packed Country Championships has concluded in Traralgon as the Under-14 Country Champions were crowned across Division’s One through Four.

Throughout the three-day event, associations from all across regional Victoria came together to display fantastic basketball abilities, despite the challenges the athletes may had faced over the past twelve months.

Division One was a blast throughout the weekend, with Macedon Ranges securing the title in the boys, while Warrnambool fought their way to their girls championship. It was the Eve Covey and Poppy Myers show on Sunday afternoon for the Mermaids, rising to the biggest occasion to combine for 35 of Warrnambool’s 45 points in the decider. Macedon Ranges edged past Ballarat in the grand final, off the back of a big game from Sonny Maxwell.

In Division Two, it was Maffra’s boys and Korumburra’s girls who were left at the end of it all, both securing double digit victories in the championship game. Maffra’s Judd Burgiel dropped 21 points in the final to lead the Eagles, while special mention must be given to Micah Livingstone who matched that tally for the gallant Hornets. On the girls side of things, Korumburra’s Megen Cooper finished with 17 in the runaway victory over Maffra.

The tightest grand final games came in Division Three, when Swan Hill boys squeezed past Bacchus Marsh by three points as well as Horsham taking home a six-point victory in the girls against Bellarine. Bodhi Kelly and Sonny Beasy were the leaders for the Flyers, while Cara Tippet was the only player in double figures for the fixture.

Finally, Division Four was claimed by both Terang and Wangaratta in the boys and girls respectively. The Tornadoes used the trio of Hamish Molan, Charlie Roberts and Oliver Guthrie to power their offence, where as the Warriors did their damage by committee – four players scoring six points or more en route to a nine-point victory.
